Moxibustion – Moxa Therapy
(Burning of Dried Herbs)
Moxa therapy or moxibustion is a heat therapy that functions through burning special moxa cones made of mugwort or various other herbs on specific acupuncture points, which are spread over the body on meridians or energy channels so that the Qi (the body's energy) flows through the body.
Moxibustion and moxa therapy is a treatment method from traditional Chinese medicine that can be combined with acupuncture needles or used on its own.
In a moxa cone treatment, the therapist places the pressed mugwort directly on the acupuncture point supported by a base on the skin such as a slice of ginger, and thus tries to bring the patient's energy flow into balance.
In moxa cigar treatment, the moxa cigar, which is made of moxa herbs wrapped into a cigar form, is lighted and moved in circular motions over larger areas of the body such as the back, stomach or feet. The cigar is held at a distance of 2 cm to 4 cm so that the areas of the body are heated and the body's energy flow is strengthened.
Moxibustion, Moxa on Acupuncture Needles (Hot Needles)
In this treatment method, the therapist applies acupuncture needles with moxa cones or moxa cylinders fixed and lit on the ends. The needles pass the heat of the moxa through the acupuncture points. Through the activated heat stimulus, the therapist tries to resolve potential energy blockages and get the Qi flowing once more.
