Medicinal Leech Therapy

Medicinal leeches (Hirudo medicinalis) are bred under hygienic conditions and may only be used once, according to established rules.

The saliva of the leeches contains many positive substances, the best known of which are hirudin and eglin. These substances have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, anti-coagulant, anti-bacterial and circulation-enhancing properties, among other benefits.

The leech and its sucker are set in the desired location. With its three razor sharp jaws, it pierces through the skin. Its saliva has pain-inhibiting properties, allowing it to suck around 8 mL to 10 mL of blood from a patient without the patient noticing.

The secondary bleeding of about 20 mL to 30mL of blood may take several hours, resulting in the relief of the surrounding tissues, stimulation of blood circulation and excretion of waste products.

This treatment simultaneously causes the activation of the body's self-healing processes.
